Skin Care: Effective Ingredients

Comments Off

Modern skin care products contain various ingredients that are effective for many purposes, including cleansing, healing, soothing and firming. The following is a list of ingredients to look for in these products:

ALLANTOIN is a chemical extracted from the comfrey root. It is an anti-irritant with healing and soothing properties that makes an excellent additive in face creams, masks and lotions.

ALMOND OIL is a vegetable oil extracted from almond seeds. It stays fresher longer than many other similar nut oils and for this reason it is used in many skin care products.

ALOE VERA is a natural moisturizer. It serves as a delivery system for other vitamins and nutrients in skin care products and can probably be considered an essential ingredient in almost all skin care products.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is an anti-oxidant with a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. The fat soluble portion of alpha lipoic acid is of tremendous benefit to the skin. Substances that are water soluble do not penetrate the skin very well, but fat soluble molecules do penetrate.

ASCORBIC ACID is a water soluble form of Vitamin C which promotes collagen production. Vitamin C also has anti-inflammatory properties and defends against free radicals in the skin created by sunlight, ozone and harsh chemicals.

CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) EXTRACT is from chamomile which is one of the few herbs that has any value for the skin. A mild mixture of chamomile leaves produces an oily substance that is soothing to the skin. Matricaria is a derivative of chamomile that some experts believe hastens skin healing.

DMAE is a nutritional substance that can be found in fish such as salmon. It is an anti-inflammatory, anti-aging topical agent that increases skin health, tone and radiance. A landmark study in which DMAE and alpha lipoic acid were combined in a topical solution showed marked resolution in scarring for patients with surgical scars when applied twice daily. It can also reduce the severity of atrophic (indented) acne scars. DMAE can also act as a penetration enhancer to increase the anti-inflammatory effects of alpha lipoic acid. Topical application of DMAE has a cumulative effect and can decrease the appearance of large pores over time.

EVENING PRIMROSE OIL is a source of GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid), an Omega-6 essential fatty acid which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.

GLYCERIN is a clear, syrupy liquid made by chemically combining water and fat. The water splits the fat into smaller components, glycerol and fatty acids. It improves the spreading quality of creams and lotions and prevents them from losing water through evaporation.

GRAPESEED EXTRACT is important to skin care because it protects collagen from damage by free radicals, dampens inflammation and helps maintain the health and integrity of blood vessels.

GREEN TEA EXTRACT helps protect the skin from damaging free radicals. It contains powerful anti-oxidants called polyphenols that are also excellent anti-inflammatories.

HYALURONIC ACID is a substance found in human cells that helps hold moisture in the skin, as much as 300 times its own weight in water. This is an extremely effective ingredient that can also be quite costly.

JOJOBA OIL is an expensive oil extracted from the jojoba seed that can provide a good film of moisture.

KERATIN is the protein that is the primary constituent of the hair, nails and skin.

OMEGA-3 & -6 OILS are essential fatty acids important to skin health. The Omega-3 essential fatty acids dramatically reduce the body’s production of inflammatory compounds. The active ingredients in Omega-6 oils are derived from linoleic acid.

PANTHENOL is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

SQUALENE is a substance derived from shark lipid that contains large quantities of Vitamins A and D and has very good emollient properties.

TRIETHANOLAMINE is an alkali that handles oil well by emulsifying it.

UBIQUINONE preserves the anti-oxidant action of Vitamin C and protects cell membranes against oxidative damage.

UREA is a natural substance that removes dead, dry skin cells. Urea both soothes dry skin and stimulates cell growth in the epidermis. It is a valuable additive in moisturizers. It is an aquaphilic compound that both attracts water and prevents its loss. It is the dry epidermis’ best friend. Acne-prone people should also use products containing urea as it seals in moisture without clogging pores.

VITAMIN A is probably the most important vitamin involved in the appearance of the skin. It can pas through the skins’ layers and may exert an effect on the rate of keratinization of the skin. It is also an excellent ingredient in acne preparations, dry skin care and soothing creams for burns and irritated skin. Retinyl palmitate is a form of Vitamin A that some studies indicate turns into Retin-A (the acidic form of Vitamin A) in the skin. Retin-A appears to be one of the only products that when applied to the surface of the skin reduces lines and wrinkles and restores pink color to aging skin.

VITAMIN D is absorbed through the skins’ outer layers. There is some evidence demonstrating that it exerts a healing effect on the skin when applied topically. It seems to work particularly well when combined with Vitamin A.

VITAMIN E is a powerful anti-oxidant.

This list in fairly comprehensive but by no means exhaustive. It is important to note that many of the above ingredients work well together and can have a synergistic effect when combined.

Skin Care- Control Body Odor

Comments Off

Sweat controls our body temperature. Sweat also is responsible for body odor. When bacteria react with sweat, it produces odor. Similarly pheromones that are emitted by apocrine glands also have an odor. Let us find out how to control excess sweat and control body odor.

Skin care- how sweat produces odor?

Eccrine sweat is produced by eccrine sweat glands that are distributed all over the body. This sweat that is mainly water with very small amount of salt, sugar, urea etc. is odorless. As this sweat appears on the skin surface it softens the epidermal keratin producing smell as a result. Bacteria feed upon the keratin and sweat and produce odor. In other areas of body, such as armpit, the skin is folded and moist and warm. That is the ideal place for bacteria to feed upon sweat and produce odor. Apocrine glands are mainly located around area such as scalp, groin and armpits. They produce fatty sweat with pheromones. Bacteria again break down this sweat and result is bad odor. The excess of sweat and /or bacteria can produce more body odor. The obvious solution to body odor is therefore- reduction or drying of excess sweat as soon as possible and keeping the skin free of bacteria. Here you should note that if you have any yeast infection, that can worsen the odor.

Skin care and control of sweat and odor-

Control sweat with antiperspirants. If you are having the problem of excess sweating, please consult your doctor who will suggest other methods such as botox injections and other methods. Washing body with antibacterial soap is a good idea. Keep skin dry as much as possible and change clothes that may be been worn while you had sweat because clothes continue to carry sweat producing bacteria until they are washed.. Clothes may have dried, but they carry the stench of sweat with them. Please change clothes after any activity that produces sweat. Some foods such as caffinated drinks, garlic, onions may add to sweat smell or excess sweating. Avoid these foods. Control sweat, control bacteria and keep body dry to keep yourself smelling fresh at all the times for better skin care.

Increasing Spa Profits With Private Label Skin Care Products

Comments Off

If you’re an owner or executive of a spa – Med Spa, Day Spa or Dermatologist – increasing profits as well as you’re product-line diversity are keys to increasing revenues and gross margin.

While there are numerous products to choose from, wholesale and private labeling direct from a manufacturer provides the freedom of improving branding and targeting your offerings to your clientele.

Benefits of Private Label

Targeted Customer/Patient Care – Spas generally are focused on facial cleansing, renewal, and wrinkle removal - Lower costs can be achieved by working directly with a manufacturer by avoiding costly wholesaler and “middle man” charges, while identifying niche products that work equally as well as major brands – wrinkle treatments, body firming and moisturization, or the reduction of stretch marks.

Exclusivity – We have a colleague who owns a very successful 20-station salon.  He has also become successful and profitable carrying a very wide selection of beauty supplies.  While there is a diminishing return to carrying inventory, he states he has clients who come from “miles around” to buy supplies they can’t get anywhere else.   For a spa, this can mean repeat maintenance revenue even when treatments aren’t necessary or desired.

Branding – Effective marketing displays combined with customer education on active ingredients and usage can build sales even for non-treatment prospects.  Word of mouth is powerful.  Firming lotions at low price points and that are well liked (and effective) will sell themselves providing ancillary sales to customers who might normally avoid the time or expense of treatments.  A side benefit is with increased traffic, you have the opportunity to sell additional services or products.
Considerations

While the first reaction is to label with the name of your firm, i.e. “Atlanta Skin Clinic” with an icon (picture) and the name of the product, creating your own brand such as “DermaSkin” then tagging with the product description works extremely well.  It is used commonly by hair restoration companies, and this tactic can be an opportunity to develop a “micro” site online that boosts traffic and promotes product sales and services to your firm or practice.

With increased competition, a diversity of available products, and a tight economy, private label skin care products can help increase sales, profits and improve customer and patient loyalty.  We’re always looking for an opportunity to increase in-store or online traffic; expanding your offerings at higher margins help increase profitability and demonstrates effective solutions and professionalism.

Tips For a Better Hair Care

Comments Off

There were days when no clues were available for maintaining your hair. Now you will be going through the facts and tips for better hair care:

o Heat has to be decreased

It is a general practice to use blow dryers to dry the hair. By allowing it to dry naturally you give a break from the heat, in other words you are reducing the potential damage heat can do to your hair. The resultant effect of this hot air is dryness and breakage to your hair. The hotter the dryer the more breakage will occur to your hair. It is always better to set the temperature of the hair dryer blower to the lowest. This will help to keep your hair healthy.

o Flyaway Hair

This is common where there is low humidity and dry climate. Static electricity and having rough hair cuticles at the outer layer of the hair cause this ‘Flyaway’. By moisturizing the hair through the use of an alcohol-free hair conditioner this ‘Flyaway’ can be further decreased.

o Your Hair Vs Crash Dieting

Yet another reason for your hair loss is severe dieting. Avoid crash diets because they can lead to significant hair loss. A sensible way for reducing the weight is by increasing the exercise levels and reducing the calorie intake.

o Arrest the Hairline pimples

You have to prevent the breakouts on hairline by keeping the hair care products away from your scalp and secondly by wearing a baseball cap or a clean hat that is not very tight to trap the dirt and sweat.

o Good Bye to Dandruff!

The general cause for the dandruff is an increase in Pityrosporum yeast that is a normal inhabitant of the skin. The other causes are:

o Oiliness of your skin

o Stress

o Heavy drinking

o Certain drugs

Different types of medicated shampoos could be used daily or 2-3 times a week by leaving it on the scalp ideally for 5 minutes.

o Grey Hair

As we become old our hair turns grey because the cells at the root of the hair produce less melanin which is the cause for the pigmentation. This is a slow process and usually occurs between the ages 30 and 60.

o Sudden Hair Loss

If you suddenly start loosing a lot of hair it could be a symptom of illness. Rush to the doctor to have a thorough check up.

o All about my Hair!

You will be surprised to know that 13% of your hair is made up of water. When it becomes dry it looses its ability to stretch and breaks off. By trying moisturizing shampoos and hair conditioners this could be controlled to a certain extent.

o It’s only Hair – Do not boil it!

When you use heating tongs or the hair dryer on damp hair keep them away at least 12 inches from your hair so that you will not boil the water in the hair shaft.
